Heavy Ball - Between Half Court Drill: Build Championship-Level Ball Handling
Why I Created This Drill — The Story Behind the Heavy Ball
Listen, I'm going to be real with you. When I came up at Abraham Clark High School in Roselle, we didn't have all the fancy equipment you have access to today. We had one basketball, a concrete court, and the determination to be great. That mentality stuck with me through the University of Buffalo and UNF, where I became the all-time leading scorer in 2.5 years.
The heavy ball drill came from necessity and wisdom. After my playing days — standing across from Amare Stoudemire in that Orlando Magic pre-draft workout — I realized that your hands and your basketball IQ are your most valuable assets. Not your vertical. Not your speed. Your MIND.
When I started coaching at UNF in 2003, I watched players with incredible athleticism lose to players with incredible fundamentals. That's when I knew: we need to train ball handling differently. We need to make your hands and your mind work together under pressure. That's why I invented Ball Hog Gloves and why I'm sharing this heavy ball between half court drill with you today.
The Heavy Ball Between Half Court Drill — What It Does
This drill is not about looking flashy. It's about building real control. When you use a heavy ball between half court — moving it side to side, front to back, keeping it tight — you're doing three critical things:
1. Building Hand Strength and Sensitivity — The weight forces your hands to work harder. When you go back to a regular basketball, it feels like air. Your control explodes.
2. Developing Basketball IQ — You can't rush this drill. You have to think. You have to anticipate where the ball is. You have to feel it. That's where championship-level ball handlers live — in their minds, not their feet.
3. Training Under Pressure — A heavy ball doesn't forgive sloppy hands. It forces you to be precise. In a game, when a defender's hand is on you, when the pressure is on, you'll have the muscle memory and confidence to execute.
I've seen kids go from struggling with turnovers to being floor generals because they committed to this drill. One kid, Jayson, came to JumpStart Hoops turning the ball over 4-5 times a game. After three months of heavy ball work, he cut his turnovers in half and earned a full ride to a Division 1 school. That's the power of this work.
The Speed Theory Applied — Master Your Gears
Here's something I teach all my players: you have four gears. Gear 1 is slow and controlled. Gear 4 is full speed. Most players only know Gear 4. They panic and sprint.
With the heavy ball between half court drill, you're learning to work in all gears. Start in Gear 1 — deliberate, controlled, feeling the ball. Build to Gear 2, then Gear 3. Only move to Gear 4 once you've mastered the lower gears. This is the Godwin Theory applied to fundamentals.
In your games, when you're up 3 with 10 seconds left, you don't need Gear 4. You need Gear 2. When you're down 2 with 5 seconds left and need a bucket, then you go to Gear 4. But you go there with control, with precision, because you trained it that way.
Proverbs 21:5 says: "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." That applies to your basketball. Slow, deliberate work in practice creates wealth on the game floor.
Score With Your Mind, Not Your Feet
This is one of my core teachings, and this drill is where it lives. When you're doing the heavy ball between half court work, you're not running. You're not jumping. You're standing, thinking, and working your hands. This trains your brain to find solutions before your body moves.
At UNF, I scored 26 points against Central Michigan because I had a plan before I ever touched the ball. I knew where the defense was weak. I knew my angles. I knew my footwork. The ball handling was the tool — my mind was the weapon.
That's what I'm passing on to my sons, Kam and Klay. That's what I'm teaching at JumpStart Hoops. That's what I'm sharing with you in this video. Basketball is a game of chess played at game speed. This drill teaches you the chess.
